The World of Captain Beefheart feat. Gary Lucas, Nona Hendryx, Tammy Faye Starlight, and Bob Holman
Legendary guitarist Gary Lucas with very special surprise guests presents a tribute to his longtime friend and mentor, the visionary composer, bandleader, poet and painter Don Van Vliet a/k/a Captain Beefheart. Lucas mastered Captain Beefheart’s complex music on the final two Beefheart albums, “Doc at the Radar Station” and “Ice Cream for Crow”.
Since the dissolution of Beefheart’s band Gary has been actively performing tributes to Don Van Vliet all over the globe. This special evening will include a performance by Lucas' latest ensemble The World of Captain Beefheart, which includes expert Beefheart practitioners Jesse Krakow on bass, Richard Dworkin on drums, Jordan Shapiro on keyboards —with a very special guest lead vocalist to be announced! The performance features screenings of rare video clips of Beefheart, projections of Don Van Vliet’s stunning paintings and drawings, live readings of his surrealist poetry, rare tracks and spoken word pieces, plus more surprises.
Van Vliet changed music beginning with a series of ground-breaking albums with his Magic Band - from 1967’s “Safe as Milk” to 1969’s “Trout Mask Replica” through 1982’ “Ice Cream for Crow”. By combining Delta blues, free-jazz, off-kilter rhythms, and savage proto-punk rock with surreal imagery, ecological concerns, and the highest and airiest of wit, Captain Beefheart’s sound proved highly influential on the first wave of punk avatars including John Lydon, Joe Strummer, and David Byrne. On stage and on record Van Vliet explored musical and lyrical territory never before charted before devoting himself full-time to painting, garnering a loyal worldwide fan base in the process.
